Last weekend we said goodbye to our final campers for the season. We have loved every minute of this summer and can’t wait for next year, but for now we have to pack away and start thinking about all of the Autumn jobs around the farm.
The weather has been glorious over the last few days so we thought we would start with the apples. We had more than we could cope with last year but this year the tree by the field seems to be taking a break, thank goodness! We still have plenty of cookers and eaters though so it will be apple cake and crumbles all round for the next few months.
My Grandmother used to send apple crumbles and apple pies down the road to us from the farm (via the postman, who knew better than to object!) until we couldn’t face any more. I now understand why and admire her determination not to let any apples go to waste. We have a hard act to follow but the day my children look at me with horror at the thought of another apple crumble I will know I have succeeded.
