Appreciating the small things

A walk around the farm, especially on a sunny day, is almost always guaranteed to lift my spirits. There is usually something to see, whether it is a group of roe deer relaxing on the 16 acre field or, if I am really lucky, a quick glimpse of the sparrowhawk.

I am always looking out for signs of wildlife, but sometimes in focusing on the bigger things I forget the smaller creatures that are minding their own business and getting on with things around me.

The logs around the communal firepit are finally beginning to collapse as they slowly rot away. They have provided seating and an impromptu climbing frame for the past few years, but now need to be replaced. Yesterday, we carefully moved them over to the dead hedge where they will continue to slowly disintegrate in peace. Whilst moving them we uncovered a whole world of miniature life that has made its home in the nooks and crevices of the wood. It is easy to forget that this world exists, out of sight and mostly out of mind, whilst we carry on with our activities on the campsite. It is good to be reminded as it is just as important as the larger wildlife that catches my eye as I am out for a stroll. The reminder inspired me to spend some time adding more natural materials to our bug hotel!
